Entrepreneurial Character Traits

Q: What are the character traits of a successful entrepreneur?

A: As I started to pull together a list, I realized that most of entrepreneurial character traits were right off a typical list of the kind of traits that anyone would aspire to both have for ourselves as well as to instill in our children. These typical traits include:

  • Initiative
  • Perseverance and Persistence
  • Creativity
  • Diligence
  • Flexibility
  • Leadership
  • Passion
  • Patience
  • Flexibility
  • Boldness
  • Persuasiveness
  • Resourcefulness
  • Enthusiasm
  • Integrity

But the unique traits that I think really set entrepreneurs apart as these:

  • Motivation to achieve – success-oriented, competitive, enjoys big challenges, and sometimes motivated to a point of being obsessive
  • Independent – desire to be independent and stay independent so they can control their schedule and life
  • Imagination – always questioning and never taking “no” for an answer, often a nonconformist
  • Vision – the intuition and ability to see beyond the obvious status quo, rise above the mundane details, and see the bigger picture
  • Risk tolerance – willingness to try new things, and fail
  • Contribution – desire to build something better and to contribute to society
  • Desire to learn – jack of all trades with a voracious appetite to learn and understand new things across many disciplines, often very “street smart” and savvy to how things really work

Further, as Christians, we should see our entrepreneurial endeavors in the context of the larger spiritual picture of deepening our relationship with God, evangelizing, and serving others, which means adding character traits such as:

  • Service
  • Humility
  • Stewardship
